Retired city firefighter living upstate cashes in on winning $122 million Powerball ticket
A retired city firefighter living upstate won a $122 million Powerball jackpot, lottery officials said Friday.
Stephen Kirwan, a 24-year FDNY veteran who worked in the South Bronx, hit the winning numbers Jan. 22 after buying the winning ticket at a laundermat near his Purling, N.Y., home.
“I’m not overly lucky,” Kirwan said Friday. “My own house was damaged by fire last year. I guess I got a lifetime of luck all at once.”
Kirwan, 68, opted to receive a lump sum of $40 million after taxes. The longtime Lotto player said he checked the newspaper for the winning numbers as he always does on Sunday mornings. Read the whole story…
